The following second definition represents a more up-to-date description of geodesy given by the Committee on Geodesy of the U. S. National Academy of Sciences in 1978. • Establishment and maintenance of national and global three dimensional geodetic networks • Measurement and analyses of geodynamic phenomena (earth rotation, earth tides, crustal movements, etc.) • Determination of the earth's gravity field Items 1-3 include also changes with time Why has geodesy to deal with the gravity field ? First of all, every geodetic measurement is a function of the gravity field (Example: by putting an instrument into the horizontal plane (by using spirit bubbles), it aligns its vertical axis with the local plumb line (local gravity vector) which, unfortunately, may vary from point to point.
